The Harriet Hancock Center offers a variety of trainings to provide education about the LGBTQ+ community and promote more inclusive environments in organizations, businesses, schools, and healthcare spaces.

Sample Training Topics

  • A basic introduction of LGBTQ+ related language and terminology.

    Objectives:

    • Understand the basics of sexual orientation and gender identity.

    • Recognize the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community

    • Create an inclusive and supportive environment

    • Learn what general advocacy can look like

  • A foundational training teaching the differences between sex assigned at birth and gender identity, how to use inclusive language, and how to implement policies to create safe, welcoming environments.

    Objectives:

    • Learn the differences between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, and gender expression.

    • Explain the importance of pronouns.

    • Recognize the impact of misgendering 

    • Identitfy and implement inclusive habits and practices

  • An overview of the legislative policies impacting the LGBTQ+ community and how individuals/organizations can participate in advocacy efforts.

    Objectives:

    • Understand the basics of sexual orientation and gender identity

    • Recognize the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community

    • Understand the basics of how a bill becomes a law

    • Discuss how laws influence policy, which influence implementation

    • Learn how to create an inclusive and supportive environment

    • Learn what general advocacy can look like

  • Moving from passive awareness to active advocacy.

    Objectives:

    • Distinguish between ongoing, authentic allyship and one-time gestures.

    • Learn to practice intervention, inclusive language, and de-escalation when you notice discrimination.

    • Build personalized strategies for advocacy and inclusive policies.
